Who is Tom Messiaen?

Tom Messiaen specialises in social law (individual and collective labour law, social security and international employment), statutory employment and social criminal law.

He holds a Master of Law degree (Ghent University, 1994) and lectured on labour legislation to Masters students in Business and Communication at the UG-HOG until 2010. In 2012, he completed the management course on Compensation and Benefits Management at the Vlerick Management School.

Tom Messiaen has been a member of the bar of Ghent since 1994. He was a founding partner of the De Schrijver Van de Gehuchte Messiaen association, which on 1 September 2008 merged with Monard Law, where he heads the social law department.

Every year since 2006, Tom Messiaen has been listed in European Legal Experts as a leading lawyer in the field of employment in Belgium and features in the Legal 500 as a specialist in social criminal law. At Ghent University, Tom is active as Academic Advisor within the Department of Criminology, Criminal Law and Social Law. In addition to his legal practice, he is a much sought-after guest lecturer and speaker at seminars. He is also a frequent contributor to books and articles. His main topics are disguised employment, social inspection and criminal prosecution, privacy in the employment context, Social Law in the context of acquisitions and the legal status of statutory personnel. He is also a member of various editorial boards, including for the series 'Sociale Kronieken' and the magazine 'Tijdschrift voor Gentse en West-Vlaamse rechtspraak'.

Since 2001, Tom is deputy judge with the Labour court in Gent, and since 2016 he is employed as an expert with the Advisory Council social criminal law which is watching over matters regarding social criminal law and foresees in legislative recommendations.
