Bernard Vanheusden is a Doctor of Law (Catholic University of Leuven, 2007), Master of Law (Catholic University of Leuven, 2000) and Bachelor of Philosophy (Catholic University of Leuven, 1996). He wrote his dissertation on brownfields development (Brownfields Redevelopment: naar een duurzame stadsontwikkeling. Rechtsvergelijkende analyse betreffende de sanering van sites – towards sustainable urban development. Comparative law analysis concerning site remediation).

In January 2011, Bernard Vanheusden joined the legal practice of Monard Law.

Bernard Vanheusden is also Professor with the Law Faculty at the University of Hasselt and guest lecturer at the Hogeschool-Universiteit Brussel. He lectures, in particular, on Environmental Policy, European Environmental Law, and International Environmental and Energy Law.

Bernard is Editor-in-Chief of the journals “Milieu- en Energierecht” (MER) and “Journal for European Environmental & Planning Law” (JEEPL), both environmental publications, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the “Tijdschrift voor Bouwrecht en Onroerend goed” (TBO), a publication dealing with the construction and real estate industry. He is also a member of various committees (e.g. chairman of the ‘Geschillenadviescommissie Mestheffingen – Disputes Advisory Committee on Manure Levies) and expert commissions (e.g. IUCN Commission on Environmental Law).

Over the years, Bernard has gained wide-ranging expertise in Public Law. Within this field, he focuses in particular on Environmental Law (environmental permits, soil, waste, water, nature, environmental impact assessments, brownfields, REACH, liability, maintenance, etc.) and Energy Law (contracts, operations, construction and infrastructure works, renewable energy, emission trade, etc.). He boasts an extensive publication list on these topics and is in considerable demand as a speaker.
